We’re dipping into some real cool temps in Nevada County. It feels so good! The garden and flowers are slowing down and, as always at the time of the year, I’m a little sad, happy for a change of pace, but mostly excited for the fresh slate of the next growing season.

I’m exceptionally sad to say “until next year” to the dahlias though. Over the last 5 years they have completely stolen my heart and interest. I’ve begun the slow and tedious process of digging and dividing tubers to place in cold storage until spring as I’m going to do a little reorganization of the patch. I’ll also be dipping my toes in dahlia hybridizing in hopes of creating some uniquely beautiful varieties born in Nevada County.

Next year I’m expanding the patch and braving planting some in our native soil (gophers be damned) so that I can have even more of these beauties to share with the community. It’s going to be wonderful. 😊

After subscription bouquets are created and delivered, I often get to use the left over blooms or those blooms that didn’t make the cut (poor quality, short stems, slightly overripe) to make arrangements for the house.

This week we have dahlias, zinnias, strawflowers, celosia, sunflowers, and lemon basil.

Week 3 of my Summer Bouquet Subscription was JUICY!

I never thought I’d love the orangey/purply color palette as much as I do. I’m also SOOO glad I invested in LxA hybrid lilies this year. Their helping bridge the gap from spring to summer focal blooms incredibly well.

I know many people don’t like the fragrance of lilies, but the LxA hybrid varieties are almost not fragrant at all, which lets the Monarda/Bee Balm’s lemony fragrance really shine in this bouquet.

Looking at the garden this week , I’m feeling eternally grateful for a gentle easing into summer. There have been several seasons where we heat up way too fast, but this year all the cool season annuals and ephemerals have been luxuriating in a beautifully mild spring.

The fact that I still had ranunculus to offer to bouquet subscribers after Mother’s Day was delightfully shocking.

My 6 year old ‘Bowl of Beauty’ peony bushes bloomed their heads off. And my stand of foxgloves are almost 6 feet tall. My goodness, they are a breathtaking sight.

The winter planted snapdragons are blooming their heads off and I’ve found myself vowing to grow each type and pretty much all the colors next year.

I want to talk more about cool season hardy annuals with you all. We have it especially great, fellow Zone 9a gardeners, as we can fall/winter plant almost all of them without issue! They are easy (especially because you can direct sow many of them) and absolutely gorgeous.

It’s early May, and many of the cool season hardy annuals that I started WAY back in October/November are finally blooming. This is my first year fully embracing and loving growing cool-season hardy annuals. I made this sweet little arrangement for my desk at work. Since starting the Spring Bouquet subscription, I haven’t had a ton of time or extra blooms to make anything remotely complicated for myself.

Taking time to roam through the gardens and pick anything that is ripe and beautiful is one of my favorite indulgences. It’s part of why I love gardening and tending a cut flower garden so much. Once everything is in the bucket, I love seeing what color palette jumps out at me. This week was purples, whites, and yellows.

This sweet little meadowy arrangement includes:
1. White Ranunculus
2. Peachy white Icelandic poppies from the ‘Champagne Bubbles’ mix/
3. Chive blossoms (I’m exceptionally in love with these)
4. Larkspur foliage
5. ‘Frizzle Sizzle Blue Tapestry’ Pansies

7. Spikes of purple Veronica

I’ve been struggling with thrips worse than ever this spring. Thrips are tiny sap sucking insects that seem to absolutely love living in tight enclosed flowers like anemones, ranunculus, snapdragons, and roses.

While I could hit them with some organic pesticides, I’m trying my best not to rely on them too much in favor of solid soil health practices like mulching with healthy well-aged compost and only adding amendments that my soil tests indicate will help certain deficiencies.

I’m also going to lean heavily into inviting and introducing as many beneficial insects into the garden as possible. Thanks to @sweetlandgarden for helping me order in some special predatory mites and lacewing eggs.

The lacewing eggs come on these tiny cards that you can hang on little stems. They mature and hatch right in the garden and get to work. Lacewings are notoriously hearty eaters and excellent predators.

The mites I ordered are specialized thrip predators. They arrive in these sachets with some food inside. Once the food is gone, they crawl out of a tiny hole in the sachet and look for more food (thrips 😈). The species I added this week are:
🐞 Amblyseius swirskii
🐞 Amblyseius andersoni

I’ve heard great things about these mites and will plan on introducing them again throughout the season to help stay on top of the thrip issues ahead of the dahlias blooming since they LOOOOVE dahlias too. Those rascals.

2. We have a lot of little bumbles, like in the first video, but this BIG MAMA bumble joined the feast as well.
3. Edible Ground cover mosaic (variegated oregano, frizzle sizzle pansy, lemon thyme, sweet woodruff)
4. Pink Petticoat Columbine is in bloom! I started this plant from seed about 4 years ago. Aren’t those ruffly petticoats gorgeous?
5. A closeup of that columbine, because....dang!
4. ‘Bronze Beauty’ Ajuga is in bloom. I brought this plant home as part of a six pack last year in order to try out some new ground covers. So far, they’re great and slowly spreading.
5. ‘Burgundy Glow’ Ajuga in bloom. This plant is HAPPY and easily one of my favorite additions from 2023.
6. More Frizzle Sizzle Pansies because I cannot get over how much I love them.
7. Perennialized ‘Bronze Beauty’ Calendula in the veggie garden.

We’ve made it! Our first round of very early spring hardy annual flower babies are out on the covered porch to harden off for a week before being planted in the garden.

We’re a little behind due to a cold storm front that blew through over the weekend. Hardening off is a critical time for these little ones. They’ll use this week on the porch to thicken up their cell walls in response to the wind, sun, cooler temps.

In a several more weeks, these tiny plants will be blooming and heading home with our Spring Bouquet Subscription members.

We’ve made it! Our first round of very early spring hardy annual flower babies are out on the covered porch to harden off for a week before being planted in the garden.

We’re a little behind due to a cold storm front that blew through over the weekend. Hardening off is a critical time for these little ones. They’ll use this week on the porch to thicken up their cell walls in response to the wind, sun, cooler temps.

In a several more weeks, these tiny plants will be blooming and heading home with our Spring Bouquet Subscription members.

Here are my tools of the trade at this time of year.

Last night I started 220 seeds! All of them were mini 3/4” blocks and a good majority of them were perennials like this Lady’s Mantle.

When I was starting this same number do seeds in cell trays the sheer number of them would have taken up an entire shelf or two of my seedling rack, but with mini blocks on these small trays I still have so much room!

What I started yesterday:
-Lady’s Mantle
-Hyssop
-Rudbeckia (2nd succession)
-Echinacea (2nd succession)

I still have a few more trays to start this weekend, but it’s not overwhelming when you do little batches each week.

Anyone want to see an update on the progress of the seedling station?

This week in Zone 9a there’s plenty of hardy annuals to direct sow outdoors.

For many years I didn’t lean into direct sowing because I was worried about weed pressure and adequate watering, but these cool hardy annuals make this task SO EASY. We have plenty of rain in the forecast and a well tended bed for these little babies. Plus, they LIVE for this cold weather. Compared to those seeds that prefer to be started indoors and transplanted, the work involved with direct seeding is almost non-existent. I highly recommend you give it a try if you haven’t yet!

Here is what I’m direct sowing this week:

2. Larkspur
3. Nigella (aka Love-in-Mist)
4. Chinese Forget-Me-Nots
5. Phlox

We’ve owned this 5 acre property for 11 years…ELEVEN! Only now am I am starting to conceive of how different blank areas could be reworked and landscaped. For some reason it’s 1000x easier to create designs and suggestions to clients than it is to commit to a design for our place. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This space will be an extension of our cutting garden, full of perennials and shrubs for flowers, greenery, and some edible plants in a cottage style form.

We garden in heavy red clay as you can see in the first part of this video which definitely had its pros and cons. We have a DEEP weed seed bank to contend with too. To start off with we are going to:
1. Top dress with aged compost
2. Thickly seed cover crop (crimson clover and phacelia aka bee’s friend)
3. Terminate the cover crops in spring and till it in (in the areas free from mature tree roots) to inoculate the clay with some organic matter to feed the soil biology.
4. Top dress thickly with more aged compost
5. Plant thickly to (hopefully) suppress the weeds.

It’s okay to take a pause to get to know your property, the light, the soil, etc before you make a move. It’s also okay to dive in and change things as needed.

I can’t wait to show you how this looks in another month or two with the cover crop going!

Last week these ranunculus corms were soaked and set in trays to pre sprout in our unheated garage. This week they’re ready for planting!

Because we have such a bad pocket gopher problem here, most valuable tuber crops must be planted in our raised beds that have gopher wire bottoms. And since gopher protected space comes at a premium here, I’m trying something new to maximize space. Keep reading to learn more about my crazy scheme!

1. Historically, these raised are for my dahlias only. And since we are in zone 9a, I can safely leave the tubers in the soil over the winter. No digging and storing for this lady.

2. Ranunculus and anemones are cool season crops so while the dahlias are sleeping, these guys are pushing new growth and will bloom in early spring. When the weather warms up after Mother’s Day, the anemones and ranunculus start to shut down for the season while the dahlias begin to wake up. In theory, we’ll have living roots in the soil year round now, keeping the soil microbes happy and humming along.

3. I’m pushing the spacing for the ranunculus and anemones a bit to 6” when normally 8”-9” is recommended. But since we are pretty dry here I don’t think I’ll run into issues with powdery mildew like southern gardeners may face if they planted this close together.

4. In the video, the stakes are the middle of 12” squares and show where the dahlias are or new tubers will be planted. Then, I planted the ranunculus corms in 6” intervals around the 12” dahlia squares.

I’m hoping that this intercropping plan works well for us and these two crops can live in harmony together. I’ll report back this spring!

I started these gorgeous Frizzle Sizzle Yellow-Blue Swirl from @johnnys_seeds pansies from seed back in the fall in a 50 cell tray. They just started blooming last weekend and should continue through the next few months until the weather gets hot.

I’m so pleased with the results that I think I’m going to start another round in another color to plant in all my open pots.

I started these gorgeous Frizzle Sizzle Yellow-Blue Swirl from @johnnys_seeds pansies from seed back in the fall in a 50 cell tray. They just started blooming last weekend and should continue through the next few months until the weather gets hot.

I’m so pleased with the results that I think I’m going to start another round in another color to plant in all my open pots.

The bees have been focusing a lot of attention on the dahlias lately with an intensity I don’t remember seeing at this time of year before. I’ve heard some beekeepers say it’s going to be a tough winter up here based on the way the honeybees are building their hives. It makes me glad that we’re about to breeze past our average first frost date (tomorrow) to give these sweet things a little more time to prepare.
